Z-Burst Scenario for the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays
نویسندگان
چکیده
The origin of highest energy cosmic rays is yet unknown. An appealing possibility is the so-called Z-burst scenario, in which a large fraction of these cosmic rays are decay products of Z bosons produced in the scattering of ultrahigh energy neutrinos on cosmological relic neutrinos. The comparison between the observed and predicted spectra constrains the mass of the heaviest neutrino. The required neutrino mass is fairly robust against variations of the presently unknown quantities, such as the amount of relic neutrino clustering, the universal photon radio background and the extragalactic magnetic field. Considering different possibilities for the ordinary cosmic rays the required neutrino masses are determined. In the most plausible case that the ordinary cosmic rays are of extragalactic origin and the universal radio background is strong enough to suppress high energy photons, the required neutrino mass is 0.08 eV≤ mν ≤ 0.40 eV . The required ultrahigh energy neutrino flux should be detected in the near future by experiments such as AMANDA, RICE or the Pierre Auger Observatory. ITP-Budapest 590, DESY 02-145

Cosmological gamma-ray bursts and the highest energy cosmic rays.
We discuss a scenario in which the highest energy cosmic rays (CR's) and cosmological-ray bursts (GRB's) have a common origin. This scenario is consistent with the observed CR ux above 10 20 eV, provided that each burst produces similar energies in-rays and in CR's above 10 20 eV. Protons may be accelerated by Fermi's mechanism to energies 10 20 eV in a dissipative, ultra-relativistic wind, wit...
متن کاملOn heavy Majorana neutrinos as a source of the highest energy cosmic rays
Cosmic ray events beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff represent a great challenge for particle physics and cosmology. We show that the physics of heavy Majorana neutrinos, well defined by their masses, cross sections and lifetimes, could explain the highest energy cosmic rays as a consequence of the galactic annihilation of heavy neutrinos as cold dark matter particles. Galactic nuclei ac...
متن کاملNeutrino Masses in Astroparticle Physics
The case for small neutrino mass differences from atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillation experiments has become compelling, but leaves the overall neutrino mass scale mν undetermined. The most restrictive limit of mν < 0.8 eV arises from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey in conjunction with the standard theory of cosmological structure formation. A relation between the hot dark matter fraction...
متن کاملSome Current Theoretical Issues around Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays *
We address some current theoretical issues around ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We recall that scenarios producing more γ−rays than cosmic rays up to high redshift can in general only provide a sub-dominant contribution to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray flux. This includes extra-galactic top-down and the Z-burst scenarios. Finally we discuss the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic field...
متن کاملPossible detection of relic neutrinos and their mass
Recently the possibility was widely discussed that a large fraction of the highest energy cosmic rays may be decay products of Z bosons which were produced in the resonant annihilation of ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos on cosmological relic neutrinos. If one takes this so-called Zburst scenario seriously, one may infer the mass of the heaviest relic neutrino as well as the necessary ultrahig...
